ABOUT The Author

Dr Greg Arana is the son of Gregorio and Agnes Arana of Punta Gorda, Belize. He is descended from a long line of distinguished Garifuna teachers. Greg grew up on Neal Pen Road in the South Side of Belize City. His closest friends know him as “the Gregis”.

His sister is Justice Michelle Arana of the Supreme Court of Belize.

Greg studied at the Jesuit St. John’s College in Belize City. He later won an academic science scholarship to Regis University in Denver, Colorado.

Dr. Greg went on to study medicine at the University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica. He interned at St. Ann’s Bay hospital on Jamaica’s scenic north coast near Ocho Rios.

He met and married nurse Dianne and they now have three lovely children: Anichi, Risi and Nisani. These names are all chosen based on the Garifuna language of Southern Belize and Honduras. The names mean wisdom, riches and “my child”.

Dr. Greg (aka Gregis) has always believed that pursuit of wisdom brings riches. He also believes that family and friends are priceless.

He practiced in public health for ten years in the National Health Insurance pilot project on Southside Belize City. He has travelled all over Belize experiencing the diverse culture as expressed in food.

Dr Greg currently practices as a surgical assistant in the Memorial Healthcare System of South Florida. I hope that you enjoy this glimpse into the heart and soul of Belizean cooking. Keep an eye out for his next book regarding delicious and exotic “Soups of the Caribbean”Kelly Voigt (Regis University Class of 1991)
